GNOME – an easy to understand desktop in Linux  (GUI)

Linux – an OS alternative to Windows (distributed free of charge)

BitTorrent – download portions of large file from other users who are also downloading, used to download some versions of Linux

Ubuntu – African meaning “humanity to others” – a version of Linux

Edubuntu – educational version of Ubuntu

 

DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol – server assigns an IP address to every node on the network (may change over time)

 

NODE – any device on a network ( computer, printers, switches, servers)

 

Static IP – IP address is manually set on a computer (does not change over time)

 

We run DHCP but have some static IP addresses (printers, servers, switches, my computer)

 

DNS – Domain Name System – database system that translates (resolves) Domain Names to IP addresses   (i.e. www.yahoo.com  = 68.142.226.45)

 

Gateway – doorway to the Internet on a network such as ours

 

Router – (separates networks) A device that finds the best path for data being sent from one network to another network.

 

 

Internet – (Modem) – router – (firewall) – switch (or hub) – clients
